A Letter to the a Democrat

I had previously stated that US representative Barney Frank would be the individual I will be writing my letter to. This is what I composed:

 Dear Barney Frank,

I want to commend you for your contributions to the reformation of marijuana laws and the legal punishments for possesion. These ammendents are inevitable and honestly quite commonsensical. The reformation of marijuana laws is an issue effecting everyone in the country. These laws are detrimental to the advancement as a nation. We, as a nation, are suffering from one of the worst fiscal depressions in the history of our country. If we could start fighting the overwhelming multitrillion dollar financial deficit by reforming mariuana laws and taxing it; we , as a nation, would be remiss to not give it a chance. '
We need to stand up to the all-powerfull drug companies that would lose money if we persued the medicinal applications of marijuana. Let's start saving lives!
Even the agricultural and ecological benefits of the reformation of marijuana laws are undeniable. I am not asking what my country can do for me, I am asking what I can do for my country. I will not sit by silently just assuming that all the problems will go away. I am not afraid and I will let my voice be heard. I will be a part of this revolutionary change and I know you will too.
    Respectfully,
       Silas Barton

That is what I came up with and hopefully it will be embraced and meditated upon. For all of us.

How did this happen?

Recently Proposition 19 lost on the ballot in California. Preelection projections suggested that the proposition was going to pass by a large majority. This proposition would have made it legal for anyone 21 or older to grow, possess and use small amounts of marijuana. Marijuana would be held to the same restrictions as alcohol regarding minors and possesion on school grounds. Possesion and culitivation would have reasonable regulations and under federal laws it was all still illegal.
This will certainly sound like a victory to oppostion of the proposition like San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis who was a vehement bellicose front woman  fearing marijuanas exposure to children. However, this year the exposure and conversation sparked about the benefits of the legalization of marijuana could not be hushed. People aren't stupid and we all have ears to hear. The elite in charge that are in fear of some loss of profit and a loss to their endowment will not be able to prevent revolutionary progression through education. After the results Thomas Jefferson School of Law professor Alex Kreit optimistically stated, "It has become pretty clear that it’s not a question of if a state is going to legalize marijuana in the near future, it’s just when,”
Nationwide, American citizens crossed their fingers that the projections would hold up for Prop 19. When it did not pass it was only a stepping stone. Mr Kreit reiterated "I would be very surprised if we don't see it on the ballot in one state and probably a handful in 2012, whether one of those states is California remains to be seen."  I certainly agree. This was an opportunity to set a precedent and that goal was achieved. Rome wasn't built in a day and this battle has been arguously fought since advocates for the protection of our civil liberties in the 1970's.
In Short, I challenge you; educate yourself ! Look into the ecological, medical and financial benefits of the legalization of marijuana. It is your future. Be a part of solution.

Who ya gonna call? ...... Not the Ghostbusters

When fighting for an issue that could be considered "controversial" it can be difficult to find important people that are willing to advocate and speak up about the issue. These politicians have to be very particular about what they say in public because voters listen. The person I will be sending my letter to is Barney Frank. According to an article in the Herald from 2008, http://www.bostonherald.com/news/national/politics/general/view.bg?articleid=1082344
"Rep. Barney Frank is defending a bill he plans to file this week decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana, saying the federal law unfairly targets those using medical marijuana in California." I also found out that Mr. Frank tried to pass a similar bill in the 1970's. This is definitely the person I am looking to for assistance.
I saw Barney frank on the Tonight show with Jay Leno a few months ago and ironically enough Leno asked him about his stand regarding Proposition19 (legalization and taxation of marijuana).  Mr. Frank seemed a bit apprehensive about the question and just said that he felt americans should be able to gamble and drink and even smoke pot. He agreed that it should be taxed.
I did some digging and it turns out that Barney Franks's partner, a Mr. James Ready, was busted for pot in Maine in 2007. This might have fueled some of Barney frank's advocacy towards reforming marijuana laws. Whatever it takes, we are going to have to make something happen.

Prop 19

On the Novevember 2nd ballot in California is Proposition 19. Its called the "Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010." This is the first step in what will be a revolutionary progression in the way people veiw the marijuana plant. It is not a poison and a nuisance. It may be the driving force in the medical advancements of this century. It may be the beginning of the turn-around of or country's fiscal deficit.
According to CNN.com, a recent survey by Public Policy Polling indicates that a majority of California voters support the proposition 47% to 38%. Once the rest of the country becomes aware of financial opportunities that this proposition proposes, we are going to see many more states presenting legislature.
On November 2nd the state of California is finally going to ignite the change that this country has been desperately in need of. I long for the moment that I can cast my vote and be a part of the change>

My Translucent Vision

I am still undecided as to what the culmination of my work is going to look like. One vision I have is to set up a cornucopia of information at a couple of tables with utilizing pictures, diagrams, graphs and other aesthetically impactful visual aids. I will have my audience as a whole take a few minutes to walk around and peruse some of the information presented. Then, I will give a presentation explaining some of the ecological and economic benefits. I will also will also touch on a few of the many medical applications. I will infer a feeling of urgency by creating awareness. I would then open the floor to any and all questions. I would hope to interact with everyone, respectfully displaying why the issue is important to them even if they originally felt it was unimportant.

I will be researching  uses of marijuana that are good for the earth or "green" as they say. I will research which politicians are supporting and rebuking this isuue, as well as why they are of that position. I will look into projections of the fiscal impact of the legalization and taxation of marijuana. I will find out what voters themselves think about the issue. I want to know which aspect of the issue voters find more important. Is it the earth, the money or the medicine?

As i said, I am still undecided as to what form of media i am going to use for the final project. I am also considering a couple different short videos that could be put on the internet and possibly even putting together a rally. It is still a work in progress and will undoubtably be a work for progress.

Another blind skeptic

I was recently forwarde an article entitled "Legal pot in California a big mistake" by Ruben Navarrette from CNN.com http://www.cnn.com/2010/OPINION/10/14/navarrette.pot.prop/index.html?iref=obnetwork

Mr. navarette says the legalization of marijuana is dangerous. He states "It's official. The country's most populous state is nibbling at poison" The opinion of Mr. Navarette is one of bigotry and fear of the unknown. He compares marijuana to achohol and tobacco, which for the record are both significantly more dangerous.
According to Navarrette, alcohol and tobacco are harmful and that is why such high taxes are levied upon them, to discourage people from abusing them. I beg to differ. Alcohol and tobacco are definitely taxed rediculously. However I don't feel that has deterred serious alcoholics from drinking and chain smokers from puffing away.  Donate some money to Alcoholics Anonymous  or M.A.D.D if you mant to do something about alcoholism. Don't try to tell me that the reason they have these high taxes are because they are trying to discourage people from abusing the substance. That is hogwash. It is a cash cow to the state because they know even if they keep raising taxes people will still allot money to drink or smoke. Don't try to camoflauge the capitolistic GREED to look like you care about people.

The one eye-opening epiphany I drew  from Mr. Navarrette's article was that even if, as a country, we can pull together to fight for what is right, it will just be exploited by our government as an opportunity to show it's true colors. The deep, deep green of GREED. I don't know why I would have been so naive to think that we can make a positive change in this country without someone using it as a platform for the propulsion of profit.

Recognize!!! If you are not part of the solution , YOU are the PROBLEM!!

The reformation of marijuana laws is an issue that effects you all. All the people saying "I Don't Smoke Pot" with their noses in the air would be able to see the truth in front of them if they opened there eyes and looked back down at reality, at our current situation. We have: a MULTI-TRILLION DOLLAR fiscal deficit, oil prices that can only reflect the greed of the people in control of this precious natural resource, and people dying everyday from ailments that can be treated naturally preventing a majority of the side effects and  infections that arise when using the synthetic drugs that are forced on us by greedy, despicable drug companies. This IS A PROBLEM!! I see prophetic images of America resembling that of post world war Germany where Wheel-barrels full of currency can only by a couple loaves of bread. This is a pivotal moment. If the people of this country could have had the audacity to stand up against evil, currupt, vile, greedy  drug companies ten years ago, I say, we would not be in the same fiscally besmirched position. Maybe we would still be the powerful, wealthy  country we were after the industrial revolution. I hate to feel like it is now or never, however, what if it is!!! Don't just sit there and say it doesn't effect you. IT DOES!!!
How many People die each year from cancers? ........Go ahead google it . I'll wait.

What if we could have saved even 2% of these people through medical advancements utilizing THC and cannaboids. Imagine it was your grandmother who died From Breast Cancer and not mine. How would feel about the people who say, "it doesn't effect me"  IT DOES!!!!!!

According to a cnn.com analyst Mr. Navarette, "A recent survey by Public Policy Polling indicates that the majority of California voters support the proposition, called the Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010, by 47 percent to 38 percent" http://www.cnn.com/2010/OPINION/10/14/navarrette.pot.prop/index.html?iref=obnetwork
This means that in November we will be witness to the first step in this revolutionary change. I have a feeling Massachusetts as a state will be one of the next states in line to start implementing these tax opportunities.

Bottom line is that the reformation of marijuana laws brings: Assistance in battling or deficit, creating more jobs, green energy, and saving lives.
If you still feel this doesn't effect you, you are lying to yourself. Would you want to be a part of the ignorant few who are trying to insinuate that this change would be great for our country? What do you have against saving lives? What do you have against helping our country out of this financial crisis?
In closing I am telling all of YOU who say that this issue does not effect you, IT DOES!!!!!!

Civic Engagements

After looking into options for educating people about the benefits of the reformation of marijuana  laws i was pleasantly surprised. There are a few different venues that would be a good fit.The 33rd annual "Wake up the Earth Day"  will be held in Jamaica Plains at Stonybrook Station on the first Saturday in May, of 2011. This festival celebrates community organizations and diversity. This would be an ideal audience to educate on topics like: the contaminate free fuel that can be produced from the hemp plant, the economic benefits that could be seen from taxation and the many medicinal uses of the marijuana plant. There is also the JP's World Fair which has taken two years off  but is slated to return late in the summer of 2011. This Cultural Event slash Carnival is all about community and social change. Partners Healthcare and Channel 7 have put on The Annual Boston Health Expo for the past four years in June. This would be a huge  opportunity to make an impact nationally. It would cost about 50$ or so to rent a small table/booth and hand out pamphlets of N.O.R.M.L. literature and  display diagrams that vividly show some of the more major medical advancements that could be achieved by the utilization of marijuana such as its use as a bronchodilator. Another fun way to educate the masses would come at the end of September next year at the "Malden Community Health Fair" It was hosted this year by Cambridge Community Health Alliance. There were games and face painting with doctors. There were free bike helmets and other safety gear. This would be an awesome free way to get information dispersed.

I knew I would find something to do as far as civic engagements go however this opened my eyes to the idea  that awareness of my issue could be a full-time year round job. ............Sorry I was daydreaming. Back in reality I  have to pay rent and go to school. But if I hit the lottery tomorrow I vow to devote everyday of every week of the next 5 years to the education of serious social issues. But I do still have to go to school because I am not going to get an honorary degree from Harvard like Barack Obama) . Lottery money or not I will be able to get information to  vast amounts of people efficiently through the implementation of theses organized civic engagements.

I'm a voter

On Monday October 4th I approached the voter registration table a bit apprehensive. Just to let everyone know, it was absolutely painless. I filled out the paper application and just like that, I had taken a huge step toward making my opinion count and my voice heard. Now it is time to educate myself on the issues that matter to me. Then see what canidates share these political views and investigate them. Being a voter is a way to pacify the inate urge to be a detective like Sherlock Holmes. I now look forward to attending some political debates and asking questions. I now want to make my voice heard. I admit it is kind of sad that I didn't register to vote until my professor made it an assignment, but as the 12 step people would say" the first step is admitting you have a problem." There is no reason to beat myself up for not voting the last eight years. Instead, it is time to listening, investigating and asking questions. so for those of you whom are not registered to vote, I would recommend it. This sense of political influence, whether false or not, may be the beginning of the 2020 Senatorial election for the handsome , charismatic and honorable,  Me.

The president for a second grader

The President of the United States of America is Barack Hussein Obama. This job carries a lot of power. As Spider Man would say,"with great power comes great responsibility"

To be the President you must be at least 35 years old, a natural-born U.S. citizen, and have lived in the U.S. at least 14 years. There are some benefits to being the President in return for four years of work including : $400,000 of taxable income, $50,000 for expenses which is taxed and $100,000 tax free for travel per year. A taxable pension upon retirement with a salary equal to a cabinet member, which according to http://www.senate.gov/reference/resources/pdf/98-249.pdf is 191,300 per year. So yes, he gets that for the rest of his life. He gets Camp David which is a beautiful retreat on a lake in the country, his own private plane and a professional chef.

The President also has a lot of power and "say so." He is the Commander in Chief and Commission Officer of the armed Forces. This means he has the final say regarding our military. Besides impeachment, which is firing the President, the President can forgive any federal crimes. He gives speeches that other people write for him and meets with important people from other countries. He can also pick who gets some of the lower level jobs under him. He shares the power to choose the higher ranking officials like judges with the Senate, which is one of the other branches of government. The President shares the power to approve legislation with Congress, the third branch of government. Legislation is new laws. Many people say he works very hard for his money

I CAN

                                                     BE THE CHANGE
The rerformation of marijuana laws is an issue that many are too prudishly uncomfortable to speak about because it is not politically correct. In my Opinion, this is partly because of a lack of education on the particular subject, which according to "Merriam-Webster" is the definition of ignorance. I will be arduously fighting to educate and open peoples eyes to the many benefits that the legalization of marijuana presents; fiscal, medicinal  and ecological. I will be explaining in detail a few of the hundreds of medicinal applications tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can be used as an ORGANIC substitute to the SYNTHETIC DRUGS being pushed on an unsuspecting, naivly trustworthy public. I will also disclose the opportunity to assist in the decimation  the multi billion dollar deficit we are facing as a country. I look forward to working with N.O.R.M.L.  which is an organization that has made great leaps of progress in the reformation of marijuana laws. I eagerly anticipate interviewing and getting feedback from skeptics and naysayers. Enlightening and educating every enemy of the evolution of herbal medicine is a task I will be taking very serious. I will be analyzing sociological alterations that will arise when this momentous ammendment is made.

I am not advocating the use of "drugs" in anyway and am approaching this topic as an unbiased inquirer  . Hugs not drugs! Lets save the lab rats

A Dream for Everyone

In seventeen minutes at the  Lincoln Memorial during a march on Washington, on August twenty eighth of nineteen and sixty-three,  in front of two hundred thousand of his peers, Dr. Martin Luther King delivered in my opinion what will live on as the most powerful and meaningful speech in the history of mankind.  Preceding his speech he was introduced as the “The Moral Leader of Our Nation”. That is powerful. At this time racial segregation was a serious problem on the brink of a resolution. However, change is never easy and some times dangerous. In this moving speech he refers to the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence as “A promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.... A promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the “unalienable rights” of “life liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” He then goes on to describe the current situation as “Quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.” He explains the solution saying “The sweltering summer of the Negro’s legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen and sixty-three is not an end, but the beginning…. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright days of justice emerges.” That gives me goosebumps.
I am a very big fan of rhetoric and the use of particularly placed words to properly paint a vivid, pristine picture. Like unforgotten orators of lore, Dr. King was captivating. Another speaker on this day was U.S. Representative John Lewis. He was quoted saying “Dr. King had the power, the ability and the capacity to transform those steps on the Lincoln Memorial into a monumental area that will forever be recognized. By speaking the way he did, he educated, he inspired he informed not just people there, but people throughout America and unborn generations.” This is a respected white official sticking his neck out to stand up for what he believes in, Dr. King.
At this time racial tension was either going to destroy us or force us to make a change. I have a saying, “to make change you must make waves” and I believe Dr. King was of the same sentiment. I am glad that this speech was so successful because it’s hard to imagine what would have happened if we were forced into another Civil War. Dr. King led by example and is inspiring young men and women of all races, religions and creeds over forty-seven years later. I presume that will not stop anytime soon.
I feel like we have a lot of racial tension in southern Louisiana where I am from. There is a lot of negative media influence and when you mix that with horrific poverty levels and an overall lack of education, you get a state in turmoil. We have come a long way as a union. Hopefully we can do something to educated and inspire these people to fight for a positive change before the government tries to drown them again. That is my dream

We need more billionaires like Ryan Ferrioli

This blog is in reference to a blog written by a an honorable young man entitled "Response to James M Russel's Post on Huffingtonpost.com. You can view all of Ryan's insightful blogs at  http://rcf1992.blogspot.com/

I agree with Ryan 100%. The  financial debt that the United States Treasury is facing is unfathomable. I wish Ryan was a billionaire. If more of the incredibly wealthy thought like him the world would be  much better off. Instead we are bailing out multi, I repeat Multi-billion dollar corporations whom squandered outrageous amounts of money. The weight of which is supposed to be carried by myself and the rest of the working class. I am not Karl Marx but this is rediculous. Lets,  as americans put our beautiful heads together and start brainstorming. It doesn't cost a thing. Until we start taking action, nothing is going to change.
My contributive advice would be to diversify. Lets bring the money back to the people who work hard for it.  We should farm our food locally and boycott monopolistic corporations who don't contribute to society. If we are going to think globally, we need act locally. We need to stop feeling responsible for tsunamis and earthquakes around the world. Manifest destiny is a thing of the past. In the famous words of Diamond from the critically acclaimed film The Player's Club,  "Make that money, don't let it make you"

The state of California projects 1.2 billion dollars of taxable revenue in the first fiscal year upon legalization and taxation of marijuana. That is only one state!!! Hemp can be used to create a contaminate free fuel. The hemp plant also naturally produces an exponentially stronger and more perdurable fiber than cotton. We americans need to take a stand and speak our minds. Vote! Even if you are in the lower or the supposedly existent middle class, your vote counts. Its time to think outside of the box. The box is stifling and we are going to suffocate (fiscally).

I hope I become a billionaire soon too. Free gumbo, crawfish and beer for everyone.

A Preamble to the Cultivation of the United States of America

We the people of the United States, in order to form a more tolerant, unbiased and peaceful union, establish understanding, insure financial and social tranquility, provide knowledge to induce acceptance, promote health and wellness, secure the right and liberty to think outside the box of injustice and grow marijuana, even if cotton, steel, and petroleum tycoons and huge drug companies will lose money, do ordain and establish Cultivation for all, in these wonderful United States of America

Feminism

My blog is about an uncomfortable coversation between Elizabeth Sutherland and Carol Hanisch.
Upon reading the title of the blog I was excited. It seemed fun and inviting. However, after just a few paragraghs I was anxious and uneasy. I am all about an honest debate between peers. This was not just a friendly debate. Both parties werea bit bellicose. Elisabeth understandably defensive. If I am looking at this argument, unbiastly, they both turn me off to the point that I couldn't wait until it was over.
I am actually a feminist by definition. I don' beleive in gender classifications, or any classification for that matter. Salary standards should not be dependant on whether you are a man, woman, black, white, purple polka-dotted or striped.
Every woman I have ever been socially involved with has without a doubt been a feminist. I love strong, intelligent, vocal women. It's my thing. I adore interacting with all human beings that are intelligent and opinionated.
I feel like the interviewer in this case asked negatively charged questions like, "Are you trying to be like men?" The whole conversation was riddled with ignorant statements, ie:  "But other people are more oppressed than you."(as if to imply that their suffering wasn't so bad because somewhere, someone is suffering more) "Women don't have it so bad." He insinuates that feminists are "advocating an end to families-putting all kids in nurseries." He even closes saying,"well, all I can say is you must be a lesbian".....ignorance. I feel bad for Elizabeth Sutherland. She was not givin an interview in a fair forum.
However, if I may interject, I also believe that chivalry should not die as a result. I was born and raised in New Orleans and my mother raised me to be a gentlemen. She would die if she found out I didn't say "yes ma'am" or I didn't give up my seat for a "lady."
I am exasperated by these supposed feminists that are offended when I say "yes ma'am." The disgusted looks, like I am going to steal your purse, when I hold a door open or offer my seat on a crowded subway train. Don't be mad at me because your boss called you "sweetheart."
In my opinion, as futile as it may be, women deserve every respect and right that any other HUMAN BEING deserves. ANY HUMAN BEING!
The problem for me is that I can't fully support any cause that fights for only one person or side. My vote is not for feminism on this day. I am impathetically apologetic to any woman offended for no reason. My vote is for HUMAN BEINGISM.

Waky waky, hands off snaky

My next blog is about a blog from the "Borowitz Report" entitled "Delaware Masturbators  March Against O'Donnell." I guess senatorial nominee Christine O'Donnell has a serious problem with this new epidemic sweeping the streets, masturbation. Masturbators from accross the state gathered in Wilmington today for what he refers to as " The largest pro-wanking protest in history." The protestors carrie signs reading "hands off our masturbation"  It goes on to explain, Harley Farger, a leading Delaware masturbator and planner of the Million Masturbators March, said "it was difficult to organize masturbators because they're used to acting alone"
This is hilarious to me. Mr. Borowits did not really voice an opinion on the subject but I guess that would have been incriminating for him. Is this what our politicians should be worried about? How does Mrs. O'Donnell plan to abolish this monster,  Erection alarms? A no spanking policy is in affect for the following counties....... Come on this is rediculous. Are there so few legitimate things to fight for, that this incredible prude believes that pleasuring ones self is the downfall of modern society. I think she needs to drop out of the race and go home. Sit down and have some coffe with her husband and talk this out because she needs it worse than most. My final thought is, what happens in the dark, stays in the dark. You can't tell me what to do with my body.

New Classes

This blog is about my Community Learning Seminar class at Bunker Hill Community College. At first I wasn't thrilled about being forced to take a class that wasn't in the  area of study I was persuing. Not only because to me it represented the beaurocratic power of "The Man" being impressed upon students to clearly establish who was in control. Also, because it meant I would be spending at least 350$ and six months of my precious time on something I didn't want or need.........Please allow me one moment to remove my size ten and a half Osiris skate shoe from my mouth.
Upon reception and closer scrutiny of this "Community Learning Seminar" I realized the gravity of the situation. My girlfriend likes to tell me,"you don't get extra points for making it difficult." This class is really a vast reservoir of knowledge and support for me to proverbially lap from. I now respect and appreciate the abundant support at my fingertips. I believe this class will certainly make my college experience richer. I think that offering these classes on such a wide spectrum of topics along with the implementation of student advisors and mentors mean that these "Community Learning Seminars" are probably the best idea "The Man" has ever come up with.
